NEW YORK FASHION WEEK SS19: BREAKING RULES

New York Fashion Week was explosive this year, but what happened?

Coach 1941: Bronte the dinosaur took centre stage, constructed from discarded metal. Stuart Vevers explained that the collection was about scavenging and salvaging, inspired by a trip to Santa Fe and a club scene of Western New Romantics. A guy and girl travelling across America collecting memories. As always American pop culture was referenced: patchwork defined the denim, bias-cut maxi dresses were worn with artisanal chunky sweaters and oversized fringed leather jackets. Iconography was taken from different Disney films.

Christian Siriano, Chromat and Prabal Gurung have been major proponents of body positivity for several season: transgender women, plus-size women and women with disabilities in their shows, this September saw a mainstream adoption of the movement.

The singer-turned-fashion designer Rihanna enlisted an eclectic line-up to showcase her new lingerie collection for Savage x Fenty on Wednesday (Sept. 12), featuring women of all shapes, sizes and ethnicities.

It was like an anti-Victoria’s Secret show, showing women of all colors, shapes and sizes, in all stages of womanhood (even some pregnant models), contorting their bodies while wearing Savage X lingerie, available to buy in the moment online and for fans who weren’t invited to the event, YouTube is making the show available from the comfort of your home.

Marc Jacobs did what a lot of New York designers did this season, he tried to lift spirits with happy color and volumes. He made liberal use pastel colors in a lineup of retro 1950s and 1960s inspired styles that conjured muses of collections past.

This season’s street stylers were as elaborate as ever, but one trend reigned supreme: leopard print.
